Going straight to the Cross

To do what we know

Lord of all wisdom and knowledge, the world does not know you. Even among many of your people, knowledge is lacking. Your Word is more accesible than ever, in many versions, with many tools to help us understand its message, but so few make the effort.

Even at that, we know much of what the Scriptures say. Often, our problem is not what we do not know, but what we do not do. We lack perseverance, motivation, will, discipline.

Make us people of faith who obey and do the works for which we were created. Let us be sure you are God of our plans and purposes. Help us put into action that which we already know, that we may grow in greater knowledge, put to use for your glory and not for self-exaltation. Amen.

Today's prayer: Rejoicing always

O God, you are the magnifier of joys and the muter of sadness. Every day you give us reason to exult in your goodness, countless motives for gladness. Principal among them is the cross of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, by which we have salvation, the redemption of our souls, reconciliation with you, and fellowship with your Name.

Then why, Father, do we mope and weep when trials come? Why the wailing when afflictions assail us? Why the sadness and depression when persecuted because of righteousness' sake?

The self still lurks beneath the skin. So today, Lord, we put to death the flesh, in order to rejoice without ceasing, regardless of our circumstances, independently of our surroundings. For within us abides your Holy Spirit and the word of your Son Jesus Christ, who rejoiced evermore as a man, and now much more at your right side. Amen.

Today's prayer: Taking and giving life

Lord of all joy, we find so many reasons in this world to sadden and depress us. Our eyes roam our surroundings and see suffering, desire what we do not have, reject our lot in life. The downward spiral leads even some to consider taking their own life, and of those some even do.

We want to find life, Father, and that life is in you. May we lose ourselves and lose our wants and desires in the fullness of Christ. These are necessary losses, in order to gain life eternal, found in him who freely gave up his life for the sins of the world. Amen.

Today's prayer: For these few hours

God of time and eternity, you have history under your watch. And we, with our calendars and planners, projections and megatrends, want to anticipate the future's directions and get a corner on the market.

What we need now, Lord, is just to hang on for the next few hours, to keep sin at arm's length, to remember that Scripture we read this morning, to watch for a hurting soul to be helped, to keep an eye focused on heaven.

May tomorrow's troubles not keep us from today's opportunity. Because Jesus lived fully every moment. Amen.

Today's prayer: Threshold of pain

Lord of peace and wholeness, our life is filled with pain. Bodily ills and soul suffering surround us, as a part of life, as a result of our sin, as a process of your discipline. At times, our silent scream reaches its threshold, and we feel we can bear no more.

But then we look to the Cross and see the agony of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who endured the greatest pain of all, separation from your smiling face.

We are lowly and in pain; let your salvation, O God, protect us. And bring us to that place where tears turn into rejoicing and pain dissipates before the pleasure of your eternal presence, where Jesus has gone before us. Amen.

How to Make Sure That Your Judgment Is Flawless

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 5:24--47 How to Make Sure That Your Judgment Is Flawless Yes, it is popular to say that we are not supposed to judge, but the truth is we all make judgments about many things daily. Otherwise, we would never succeed in life. The real question is what is our guide for judging. Why can we not simply follow the example of our Master and Lord? He said, 30 "I can of Myself ... more ...

Do You Ever Feel Like Just a Name?

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read First Chronicles 1--3 Do You Ever Feel Like Just a Name? Think on the manner, in which the Book of First Chronicles begins, 1 Adam, Seth, Enosh (1 Chr. 1:1). In this way begins the longest genealogy in the Bible. The names continue to the end of the ninth chapter! Were these just names? Adam; who is he? You know there is more in the Bible than the mere mention of his name in ... more ...

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 5:1--23 Jesus healed a man. Praise God! However, Jesus healed him on the Sabbath. Uh oh. Some people were ready to kill Jesus for this perceived violation of the Sabbath Law. 16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath (Joh. 5:16). Jesus did a good thing. Yet, people criticized Him severely for it. And they were not people ... more ...

They Were His Servants

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read Second Kings 24 and 25 They Were His Servants As the writer of Second Kings explains whom the Lord sent against Judah, the writer said that this was 2 ...according to the word of the LORD which He had spoken by His servants the prophets (2 Kin. 24:2). Those great men we have honored for centuries were nothing more than servants of the Lord God. What does that make us? Do you do something ... more ...

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 4:30--54 The disciples went into a town to buy food while Jesus remained out of the town. There He engaged a woman in conversation. When the disciples returned, here is what happened, 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." 32 But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know" (Joh. 4:31, 32). Having a Tender Heart

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read Second Kings 22 and 23 Having a Tender Heart When Josiah heard the word of God for the first time, he tore his clothes, knowing of the wrath that was upon Jerusalem for the idolatry of his forefathers. Therefore, he sent messengers to a prophetess to inquire of the Lord. He did have a message for Josiah. God said through the prophetess, 19 "...because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before ... more ...
