Going straight to the Cross

Today's prayer: Sending off a child

Heavenly Father, today we sent off our youngest daughter to camp for a week. Earlier this week, we put our oldest on the plane to return to college in the USA. We never quite get used to parting from our children. Even knowing that we are sending them to good places, to learn and develop their character and knowledge.

How hard it must have been for you to send your Son to this earth, knowing the purpose for which he came. To guide him day by day toward that final hour in Jerusalem. To turn your back at the moment he cried for you not to abandon him.

Such a love -- for that's exactly what it is -- is beyond me, Father. But I am glad for it. A Father's love, to bring many children to you.

By means of the Elder Brother. Amen.

Today's prayer: Remembering my baptism

Lord and Savior, I remember the day I was baptized, how I felt totally clean, completely forgiven. The joy of the moment nearly burst my heart, so glad did I feel. How long I had waited, a timid, fearful adolescent; how long I had prayed for you to put off Jesus' return, for I knew I was not ready.

Let me carry that day with me today. Let that same feeling of forgiveness and purity cover me, that same gratitude swell within the breast, that same peace surround me. For that day was the most important day of all, when I met you.

Through Christ who presented me. Amen.

Today's prayer: Seeking help

Compassionate God, your help comes in many ways and forms. The Antioch Christians helped the Judean saints by sending donations. Apollos helped the Achaians in his preaching. Phoebe helped Paul in ministering to him. He also hoped the Corinthians would help him on his journey, and asked the Romans to help him on a projected mission to Spain. He thanked the former for the help they gave him by their prayers, as well as the Philippians.

How often our help comes through others, Lord, help you provide, support you put before us for our growth, strength, and ministry.

So when we approach your throne to receive mercy and grace to help us in our time of need, let us not miss those people you put around us to provide it. Let us seek them out and not think we must go it alone.

In him who faced the cross alone, so that we might have you. Amen.

Today's prayer: Time enough

Eternal God, you have given us time enough to do all we need to do. More than that is our piling on of extraneous activity. Give us courage to cut away the chaff and resist the promise of time-savers that catch us up in accelerating circles.

Keep us going, Lord, one day at a time, while we focus on our Savior's coming. Amen.

Today's prayer: Mustard seed

Lord God, creator of the universe, you speak and things come into being, your very glance wilts the mountains and your breath melts the glaciers.

How small my efforts seem in your sight! How little we do compared to your marvelous deeds and considering the needs of the billions of souls on this earth!

But so have you determined it shall be, that the kingdom is as a mustard seed that grows to great height.

As is your kingdom, may be our faith, the seed that grows to your glory.

For Christ came as a child to become the perfect sacrifice for all mankind. Amen.

How to Make Sure That Your Judgment Is Flawless

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 5:24--47 How to Make Sure That Your Judgment Is Flawless Yes, it is popular to say that we are not supposed to judge, but the truth is we all make judgments about many things daily. Otherwise, we would never succeed in life. The real question is what is our guide for judging. Why can we not simply follow the example of our Master and Lord? He said, 30 "I can of Myself ... more ...

Do You Ever Feel Like Just a Name?

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read First Chronicles 1--3 Do You Ever Feel Like Just a Name? Think on the manner, in which the Book of First Chronicles begins, 1 Adam, Seth, Enosh (1 Chr. 1:1). In this way begins the longest genealogy in the Bible. The names continue to the end of the ninth chapter! Were these just names? Adam; who is he? You know there is more in the Bible than the mere mention of his name in ... more ...

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 5:1--23 Jesus healed a man. Praise God! However, Jesus healed him on the Sabbath. Uh oh. Some people were ready to kill Jesus for this perceived violation of the Sabbath Law. 16 For this reason the Jews persecuted Jesus, and sought to kill Him, because He had done these things on the Sabbath (Joh. 5:16). Jesus did a good thing. Yet, people criticized Him severely for it. And they were not people ... more ...

They Were His Servants

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read Second Kings 24 and 25 They Were His Servants As the writer of Second Kings explains whom the Lord sent against Judah, the writer said that this was 2 ...according to the word of the LORD which He had spoken by His servants the prophets (2 Kin. 24:2). Those great men we have honored for centuries were nothing more than servants of the Lord God. What does that make us? Do you do something ... more ...

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This evening read John 4:30--54 The disciples went into a town to buy food while Jesus remained out of the town. There He engaged a woman in conversation. When the disciples returned, here is what happened, 31 In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat." 32 But He said to them, "I have food to eat of which you do not know" (Joh. 4:31, 32). Having a Tender Heart

by Don Ruhl Read the Bible in a Year This morning read Second Kings 22 and 23 Having a Tender Heart When Josiah heard the word of God for the first time, he tore his clothes, knowing of the wrath that was upon Jerusalem for the idolatry of his forefathers. Therefore, he sent messengers to a prophetess to inquire of the Lord. He did have a message for Josiah. God said through the prophetess, 19 "...because your heart was tender, and you humbled yourself before ... more ...
